Top 10 Things To Do In Melbourne Over Summer
If you think that escaping Melbourne city in the summer is a good idea, think again! Embrace the balmy days and nights with markets, festivals, outdoor cinemas and rooftop bars.
One must do thing each summer is to go to the outdoor cinema. Its a cool experience that can be enjoyed solo, with friends or snuggled up to a loved one. So pack a picnic and head to the Moonlight Cinema this summer. If you are looking for a view with your outdoor experience give Rooftop Cinema in the city a try, where you can take in the film surrounded by the skyscrapers. For a more unique experience try the Shadow Electric in Abbotsford for more screenings.

There is no better way to spend Wednesday evenings in summer than with a sangria cup in one hand and a plate full of paella in the other. Now a Melbourne institution, expect to find international cuisine, live music and fantastic artisan stalls at the Queen Victoria Night Markets.

If you want to see live music in a unique location, you can’t go past the Zoo Twilights. Past performers include Jessica Mauboy, Josh Pyke, and Tex Perkins. It’s a great experience made even better with the knowledge that some of your money is going to a good cause.

What better way to take the temperature down than with some mouth watering Gelato? While there are lots of great spots across Melbourne, especially in Fitzroy and St Kilda, our must have is Messina in Collingwood. With over 40 flavours, from Apple Pie to Yoghurt & Berry, there’s bound to be something that takes your fancy. To make things even more interesting there’s about five or six special flavours that change every few days, to keep your taste buds tingling. Our personal favourite is Salted Caramel and White Chocolate. While you may have to queue it will be worth the wait – we promise!
Looking for a cool spot to catch up with friends, or somewhere to impress that certain someone? Well a rooftop bar is always a good shout. There are plenty of options once the sun comes out to play in Melbourne – from rooftop bars with pools to secret gardens.
Our top picks include Rooftop Bar and Madame Brussels in the city, Naked in The Sky in Fitzroy, and Captain Baxter in St Kilda. If we had to recommend just one we would go for Naked in the Sky. Here you get great views of Brunswick Street on one side and Melbourne city on the other. Good food, a great wine list and spectacular views. What more could you ask for?

Picnic in the Park
Melbourne is considered to be Australia’s garden city, due to the variety of parks both close to the CBD and further afield. So celebrate Summer by picking up some fresh baguettes, pulling out your finest picnic rug, and soaking up some vitamin D at your local park. Edinburgh Gardens is a North Side staple, while South Siders are likely to head to the Botanical Gardens.

A Quick Dip at the Beach
You don’t need to be along the Great Ocean Road for a great day at the beach. St Kilda may be the most popular beach destination close to the city, but we recommend testing the waters at Brighton, Sandringham and Williamstown beaches.
Our favourite would be Brighton beach, where you can see the iconic bathing boxes. Brighton beach used to be Melbourne’s favourite seaside destination. Here you can take a step back in time and see the 82 bathing boxes that are over 100 years old, but have been turned into works of art by their licensees.

Often times people think of lawn bowls as a sport for seniors. But the reality is very different. Go to any lawn bowls club at the weekend and you will see all generations enjoying the game. The great thing about lawn bowls is that you can be as competitive or non-committal as you like and still have a great day out. Most clubs have a bar attached so you can have a beer while you bowl in the Melbourne sunshine. Lawn bowling clubs are scattered all across the city. Find your closest one below.

Whether your interests lie in music, food or fashion, there is a festival for you each summer. From Stereosonic to the International Comedy Festival there is plenty to keep you occupied in Melbourne over the summer.
Our pick is the White Night festival. This cultural festival is a highlight, as our city streets turn into an urban playground for one night only. White Night has grown so big that it now attracts crowds as large as New Year’s Eve in Melbourne!

It’s no secret that Melbournians love their coffee. And so they should – as the saying goes, life is too short to drink bad coffee! So when the mercury rises so does the demand for iced coffee, cold drips, and affogato. Two of our favourites are Auction Rooms in North Melbourne and Proud Mary in Collingwood for a great way to chill out. Our top pick though is St Ali in South Melbourne.
