The Best Beer Gardens in Melbourne
It’s time to take this party outside. Melbourne has many brilliant outdoor bars and pubs that flourish in summer. Here are our top picks for the best beer gardens this city has to offer.
557 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne
Formerly known as the Belgian Beer Garden, the outdoor area at Village Brasserie provides a carefully chosen selection of craft beer and wine, as well as a simple and fresh food menu to match your drink of choice. Think long, wooden communal tables surrounded by luscious bougainvilleas. Our photo below doesn’t do it justice – this is certainly one of Melbourne’s largest and most popular beer gardens, and is a must visit for a weekend session in the sun.
The Standard Hotel
293 Fitzroy St, Fitzroy
The backstreets of Fitzroy often provide so many hidden treasures, and the Standard is no exception. The beer garden here is so open and inviting that even during colder parts of the year the outdoor area remains lively and full. The bar pours a variety of Australian beers and ciders on tap, and the pub grub here is plentiful and delicious. Come during the week for live music and trivia nights.
280 Sydney Rd, Brunswick
An institution in its own right, the Retreat’s beer garden is a favourite watering hole for those looking to soak up some UV rays while drinking a pint. Astroturf covers a large portion of the grounds, and the gigantic tree placed in the centre provides much needed shade while you quench your thirst. Although there is free live music on at the Retreat most nights of the week, this venue is a popular Sunday session destination.
Fitzroy Beer Garden
243-245 Gertrude St, Fitzroy
Despite a huge overhaul to the bar formerly known as Sentido Funf, the outdoor area has thankfully remained in all of its leafy glory. Located on the Fitzroy/Collingwood border, the garden is packed with greenery. The soft lantern lighting makes this spot a great place for a potential date night (as they also serve snacks and meals) or post-date nightcap. While beer is the obvious choice, Fitzroy Beer Garden also provides an intriguing range of cocktails.
250 High St, Northcote
The Wesley Anne, which resides in a former church, contains Northcote’s beer garden of choice. In winter the Wesley Anne is known for its comforting fireplace and lively band room, but their outdoor area is where patrons will be heading to in droves in summer. The Wesley Anne is definitely a ‘trendy crowd’ spot, but don’t let that put you off. If you are looking for a beer garden that is large, leafy and inviting, look no further.
