Melbourne’s Best Outdoor Cinemas
In the summer time, when the weather is fine, the last thing you want to do is spend a glorious day indoors in a dark room. Fear not, cinephiles; here is a list of the best outdoor cinemas so you can have your cake and eat it too.
A brilliant bar during summer in its own right, Rooftop offers an eclectic collection of cult classics and new releases for their summer cinema program. Grab yourself a fruity granita, settle into the vibrantly striped deck chairs and enjoy your sky-high viewing above the squalor of the city. We also recommend grabbing some sweet treats from the John Candy Bar before the film starts, so get there before sundown if you can.
Located in the Botanical Gardens, Moonlight Cinema is fantastic outdoor cinema experience that is equally great for groups or a romantic date night. While there are food stalls on premises, we highly recommend packing a picnic with antipasto goodies or a homemade baked goods. You’re welcome to bring something comfy to sit/lie on, or you can rent bean beds for $9 Did we mention it’s BYO? Marvellous.

As if you needed another reason to love the Abbotsford Convent, it will once again be home to the Shadow Electric Cinema – its becoming an institution. This venue is highly recommended for those wanting to see something a little out of the ordinary; their program includes a hit list of documentaries, ’80s classics, cult films, and the strongest studio releases.

Coburg Drive In Cinema
It’s time to go to the movies ’50s style: poodle skirt optional. The drive-in features three screens which play new release blockbusters, so you can choose your film and your screening time rather than adhering to a strict program. True to form there is a ’50s style diner that will have you covered for all your hot food and confectionary cravings. The Coburg drive-in screens films all year round, so you can enjoy this outdoor experience long after summer has gone.

Cameo Outdoor Cinema
The Dandenong ranges are a superb location for outdoor activities, and watching the sun go down over the mountains and unreachable treetops is nothing short of magnificent. The Cameo cinema is an eight screen cinema in its own right. And every year between December and April it opens its own outdoor cinema, literally out the back! The program consists largely of new releases, with a few cult classics thrown in. So escape from the city, and experience a classic at the Cameo.
